ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

Alternative Teacher Certification
Become a K-12 teacher in just 12 months with Rice University’s Alternative Teacher Certification program. The program (non-credit, non-transcribable) at Rice’s Glasscock School of Continuing Studies prepares new graduates and career changers for the rigors of the classroom. Students will meet Texas Education Agency requirements and complete a paid teaching internship, supervised by Rice faculty.

Master of Arts in Teaching for New Teachers
This 36-hour, non-thesis graduate degree program fulfills all requirements for a Texas Standard Teaching Certificate and is designed to prepare the recent college graduate and career changer for the teaching profession. All our students enter the classroom with cutting edge, practiced, teaching skills through an individualized field-based experience.

Undergraduate 5-Year Master of Arts in Teaching
Students earn their Bachelor’s degree while majoring in the subject(s) they plan to teach while also taking graduate-level professional education courses. The Rice University Bachelor’s degree is conferred upon completion of undergraduate studies and the MAT and Texas Teacher Certification is awarded one year later after completion of the teaching internship. Students must complete the requirements for their bachelor's degree (at least 120 hours) and the MAT degree (36 hours) independently of each other (i.e., no course can be used simultaneously to satisfy both an undergraduate and a graduate degree requirement.)

Teacher Certification
The Teacher Certification Program for Undergraduate Students is a 30-hour program that fulfills all requirements for a Texas Standard Teaching Certificate. Coursework includes professional education courses and extensive field experiences. The program is designed for students who are interested in pursuing teacher certification at the secondary level.
