We are developing the next generation of instructional leaders—helping people gain the skills and knowledge to transform public education. We offer individualized programs to facilitate a personalized learning experience with the goal of advancing educational equity and excellence in Houston area school districts.
And it's all happening on the Rice campus!
RICEducation was born out of a desire to extend Rice beyond the hedges and improve the greater Houston educational system.
Designed to primarily service current Rice undergraduates, RICEducation takes the very best of the Rice student body and prepares them to be leaders and mentors. Students gain one-on-one mentorship and guidance while navigating their entry into the professional world.

Embark on a new career as a K-12 educator with the backing of one of the nation’s top universities. The Alternative Teacher Certification program at Rice prepares new graduates for the rigors of the classroom through in-depth coursework on developing curriculum and hands-on mentorship in the classroom. Students will meet Texas Education Agency requirements by completing 12 hours of coursework along with a paid teaching internship, supervised by Rice faculty. The course will culminate in producing a portfolio of work based on your experiences in the classroom, helping you secure a full-time teaching position after you graduate.
Our 5-Year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program affords the opportunity for motivated undergraduate students to earn graduate credit toward their MAT while concurrently completing their Bachelor’s degree.
Students earn their Bachelor’s degree while majoring in the subject(s) they plan to teach while also taking graduate-level professional education courses. The Rice University Bachelor’s degree is conferred upon completion of undergraduate studies and the MAT and Texas Teacher Certification is awarded one year later after completion of the teaching internship. Students must complete the requirements for their bachelor's degree (at least 120 hours) and the MAT degree (36 hours) independently of each other (i.e., no course can be used simultaneously to satisfy both an undergraduate and a graduate degree requirement.)
Rice's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a 36-hour, non-thesis graduate degree program open to aspiring teachers currently completing their undergraduate degree.
One of the most important decisions a new teacher can make is to learn from seasoned educators who can guide them through their early days. The Rice MAT program matches those new to the field of teaching with mentorship and instruction when they need it the most. Through rigorous study, hands-on teaching experience and a challenging internship, each student will gain knowledge that will prepare them for certification as secondary teachers.
